“Nurturing Mindfulness in Schools”
– Professor Mark Greenberg (Penn State University)
– Tuesday 25th February, 5pm
– Ellen Wilkinson Building (Room C5.1), University of Manchester
During the last decade there has been great interest in how practices related to mindfulness can help to nurture the development of students, teachers, and family life. However, much of this work is still in its early stages and there are a variety of questions that must be addressed as it matures. These include what practices may be most beneficial for children and youth of different ages, what skills and qualifications are necessary to teach these practices in educational settings, and how can we utilize mindfulness techniques with teachers to improve their own stress management, the classroom climate, and instructional quality. In this Sarah Fielden seminar, Mark will outline research and practices (yoga, meditation, compassion practices) that have been studied in the US, UK, and Northern Europe and discuss current and future issues for both research and practice in education.
