Research Matters: Practical sustainability: what can be learned through inter-generational action research?”

Lydia Merrell

Room C3.30, Ellen Wilkinson Building

Weds 25th June, 12.00-13.00

It is 7 years since the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) produced its report on Skills Needs in the Environment Sector and since then it has become evident – from the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2014 – that the need to change ordinary behaviours and ways of living in the developed world is urgent. There are increasing calls for Green Jobs and Carbon-risk assessed. While action research which begins with the perceptions of children is unusual, in the case of world crises, it may be the best way to proceed if we are to make a difference to the understanding of adults and policy makers in particular. In this talk I report on a pilot project bringing together environmentally active adults with children as co-researchers developing questions and activities to elicit information from other adults, including Adult Education, FE and 6th form tutors, employers and government officials.
